School Girl Chic

I was having a real nostalgic moment on this shoot. I wanted to embody the school girl ethos. I loved being in school- all of it! From Montessori all the way up to Business School. It was always a safe and happy place for me. Maybe even a place to hide out until I figured out what I wanted to do with myself and my life. One thing I loved about being in school is the strong sense of self I felt. When you are growing up, you are of course still forming who you are, and yet there is a piece of you that knows who you are, without a doubt. That piece is what I remember and something I revisit whenever I am feeling lost as my adult self. No second guessing. No questions on what you will or won't do. Your truth vibrates within you and guides you like the North Star. When I think back on my school days, that's what I remember and seek to reconnect with. To pull it into present day and let that deeper knowing do the guiding.

Home on the Range

I've been thinking more about what I started to share in a previous post about how to stay present. Staying in the present moment is everything. I've spent so much of my life working towards a goal and trying to create results. While making goals and setting intentions for the future are important, so is enjoying the journey. In other words, focus on the process. Happiness and fulfillment are in the act of doing something. Sure it feels good to complete a task or even something as big as publishing a book, but the truth is one of my happiest times was when I was writing my book. I so enjoyed the process. Nerd alert!

I watched a recent video from Marie Forleo (love her!) that spoke to this very thing. I was so grateful she brought it up and gave some guidance. I'm excited to put into practice this awareness around enjoying the process without focusing on the end result. I will, of course, keep planning out the work I want to do and even the posts I produce for this blog, and with a new attitude- one where I focus on the joy I get in making the content. Anyone else want to try this with me? Maybe we can do a follow up post in a month or two to see how this little experiment of finding joy in the process is going.

FMG TV: Five Tips for Successful Thrift Store Shopping

Thrift store shopping can be intimidating for even the most seasoned shopper. Yet, unique gems and steeply discounted designer goods make it well worth it. Watch this short video to learn my five tips for a successful trip to the secondhand store.

And, as always, please feel free to weigh in with your own tips and favorite thrift stores in the comments. Here are my go-to thrift stores:

SECOND TIME AROUND, New York City- Nolita, NY. When I lived in NYC this was a staple for me. A great place to bring items and pick up a couple while they sift through your pile. I always found it best suited supplying that certain piece I needed to make an outfit work. Great for basics and wardrobe builders.

WASTELAND, Los Angeles- Melrose, CA. Where the cool kids and social media mavens like Gigi Hadid and Kendal Jenner shop. Perfect for incorporating the LA vibe into your wardrobe with a range of mainstream to designer fashion finds.

COMMON THREADS, Boulder CO. A really great curation of contemporary and designer fashion wares. I usually pick up a pair of shoes and a top or two when I visit.

MOSS, Austin TX. For those who care about fashion with a capital F. This designer resale store puts every other secondhand store to shame! Such a lovely space and curated to a T. Everything is in premium condition and hits a super high style standard. Plus, the gals that work there act as personal stylist to guide you.

The Sun Also Sets

I feel like the Universe has been trying to deliver a message to me lately... Well, one message with two parts. The first part is that change is constant in life. And, as I am learning, change is an agent for growth. Change can be scary and hard, and sometimes even painful when we are experiencing loss, but it wouldn't exist in this world if it didn't serve a purpose. That purpose is to fuel our growth- as friends, lovers, family members, leaders, inventors, etc. To get us to look inside and introspect and to also adapt as we reach for our dreams. The second part is that in order to embrace change we have to be willing to leave things and people who no longer serve us behind. It isn't because they are bad or wrong, it is just because we are entering into a new stage where we may need new resources and experiences to keep growing and evolving. I find it very hard to let go. I always have. So this is my current test. To embrace change and with it allow for past comforts to fade away. As they say, onward and upward!

She's Gone Country

This September I returned to Wyoming, and I returned to myself. I forgot how good it feels to take a walk on a back country road and listen to the leaves rustle in the wind. I forgot how broke down trucks make the scene complete. And I forgot how important it is to take your shoes off and connect to the earth.

Lately, I'm trying hard to stay in the present moment. I'm not sure if it is our current culture and obsession with success, goals and plans, but I'm finding it challenging. Can anyone else relate? Contentment is another word that comes to mind. I try to practice being content where I am. It isn't easy. I'm a driven person and have so many ideas and dreams. Yet, I'm beginning to wonder if the key to happiness is the balance between striving for what you want in life while also enjoying where you are all along the way. Is that possible? I'd love to hear what you guys think. Do you have ways of practicing contentment or staying in the present moment?
